Pencil Sketch
Artist Alicia J. Stonebreaker, Polish born and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts, Poznan, Poland and the Kassel Art Academy in Germany, sketched this wonderful shoreline scene in Westport, Maine in October, 1973. Alicia noted this in the right foreground of this sketch. Westport Island is located on Maine’s mid-coast in Sheepscot Bay. Surrounded by the Sheepscot River to the East and the Sasanoa River to the West, Westport Island is a quiet and picture perfect small Maine community with 800 residents. As you look out towards the end of the dock with the leaning supporting pilings, Alicia sketches a long expansive bay view with two sailboats, a runabout, and a lobster boat. The two dories sit lashed together held with a single tender from the high dock. She draws the pines, rocks, and distant shoreline with great skill while displaying a unique disciplined perspective.
