Description

Nahookos Bika’ can be translated as the Male Revolving One in Navajo (pronounced Na hoe kos bih kah). He is represented by the Big Dipper, which is an asterism (not a constellation) of seven stars recognized as a distinct grouping by the Navajo Nation. Nahookos Bika’ is considered to be a male warrior, a leader, a father, and sometimes a grandfather, who protects and provides for his family.

His weapons are the bow and arrow. He reflects the ideal characteristics of a provider and protector. From Dine Bikeyah or Navajo Country, he is seen every night of the year, thus providing direction, time keeping and stability for the other stars as well as for all living things. Many spiritual teachings are associated with Nahookos Bika’ and his female companion Nahookos Bi’aad,  related to male and female relationships, family values, and the sense of belonging to a home with a comfortable fire.
